One painting, from the first layers to the final adjustments

Over five sessions, we’ll develop one oil painting from a provided reference image. I’ll demonstrate the drawing, first layers, colour mixing, and final adjustments.

You’ll see how light and shadow build form, and how colour and edges connect the figure with the landscape. Apply each stage to your own painting, live or using the recordings between classes.

Approximately 90% live demonstration · 10% focused theory & Q&A

To get the most from the workshop, paint with me. Try each step yourself, and revisit the recordings when you need a reminder.

What you’ll learn

Mix natural greens

Compare hue, value, and saturation to build variety in grass and foliage, then relate those colours to the light in the scene.

Paint convincing sunlight

Use the relationships between light and shadow, warm and cool colours, and soft and sharp edges to convey a sense of sunlight.

Bring the figure and landscape together

Connect their values, colours, and edges so the figure feels part of the same environment.

I've been working with Andrii for a few years now through different workshops and mentorship and I think he's one of the most thoughtful and effective teachers I've encountered. He doesn't just give you methods to copy superficially, but takes the time to explain the concepts to make sure you really understand them. It's not just about the how but also why something works or doesn't work. The balance in theory and practical application has worked really well for my learning.

(One example of this is in color mixing, instead of simple formulas to copy, I thought his explanation of how to think about moving your mixture around the color space via what colors you're adding to be very effective. It has been extremely helpful to me in reasoning about more complex mixtures. There are a lot of hard to explain concepts in painting and I think he does a great job imparting that knowledge.)

His astonishing works are themselves a testament to his skills, understanding, and dedication to the craft and it's really a gift that he's so open to sharing and teaching! For painters who are serious about improving their work and gaining a deeper understanding, I would highly recommend taking some of his workshops.

“What I especially appreciated was that he explained not only what to do, but also why, which helped me understand the process on a much deeper level. He shared his knowledge and experience so generously while still giving me the freedom to develop my own painting.”

“What I particularly appreciated was the personal feedback. He carefully analyse my work and provide very precise and constructive suggestions on what can be improved. I highly recommend Andrii’s workshop to anyone interested in painting and looking to develop their skills.”

FAQ

Can I paint with acrylic, watercolor, etc.?

We will focus exclusively on creating oil paintings.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is open to all levels, though some basic oil painting experience is recommended. It’s well-suited for intermediate painters seeking to refine their skills, advanced artists exploring new ideas, and recent graduates or anyone stepping into a more personal painting practice.

I’m a beginner. Is this workshop suitable for me?

Some experience with oil paint is helpful, but no academic training is required. I’ll explain each stage as I demonstrate it, and you can use the recordings to work at your own pace.

What materials will I need?

I’ll send you the full materials list and reference image before the workshop. To paint along, you’ll need:

• Oil paints, brushes, and a canvas or panel
• Your usual painting supplies and a well-lit workspace
• A computer or tablet to watch the sessions
• A printed reference image or a second screen to keep the reference visible while you paint

You’re welcome to use materials you already have. You don’t need to buy the exact brands I use.

Will sessions be recorded?

Yes. You’ll have access to the recordings if you miss a Saturday or need to revisit a technique.

How can I contact you for more information?

Feel free to reach out to me via Instagram or email at kateryniukandrii@gmail.com with any additional questions.

What language is the workshop conducted in?

The workshop is conducted in English.

How does feedback work?

The Feedback option includes five 20-minute one-to-one critiques, one for each workshop session.

Critiques take place on weekdays between sessions, so you can use the feedback before moving on to the next stage. Each critique must be used within two weeks of the corresponding live session. After that, it expires unless we’ve agreed on a different schedule in advance.

If you plan to follow the recordings at a slower pace, please contact me before the workshop starts to arrange your feedback schedule.
