Workshop Highlights

Over five Saturdays in September, I’ll walk you through my entire painting process, demonstrating each stage of a single painting—from early composition decisions to the finishing touches. As I focus on placing the figure in a natural setting, I’ll share my thoughts on light, atmosphere, and storytelling. Participants are encouraged to work alongside me using provided reference images, or—if you’re intermediate to advanced—feel free to use your own references to adapt these concepts to your personal style.

This workshop is open to all levels, though for begginers some basic experience with oil painting is recommended. It’s a good fit for intermediate painters looking to refine their skills, advanced artists exploring new approaches, and recent graduates or anyone stepping into a more personal practice. Although details are still being finalized, the main structure is in place—weekly live sessions with recordings available if you need to revisit anything.

Sessions will be live each Saturday with recordings available afterward, and I plan to offer a limited number of spots with individual feedback. I’m also considering including an additional live feedback session midweek to discuss selected paintings in more depth. It’s a project I’m excited about, and I think it’ll be a great opportunity for us to explore painting together.

How It Works

What You’ll Learn

Layer-by-Layer Strategy

See how I break down a painting into underpainting, color blocking, and successive layers. This structured approach helps you build form and depth in a controlled yet flexible way.

Managing Paint Application & Edges

Controlling paint consistency is key to achieving both depth and atmosphere. We’ll look at how to adjust paint thickness for different stages, when to work wet-into-wet versus letting layers dry, and how to use edges effectively to create soft transitions and crisp focal points.

Refining Realism in a Painterly Way

Realism doesn’t mean copying every detail—I’ll demonstrate how to work with photo references without becoming overly dependent on them. We’ll focus on simplifying information, enhancing natural movement, and making confident, intentional brushstrokes.

Combining Figures and Landscapes

Discover methods for placing the figure naturally within its environment. From value planning to atmospheric perspective, we’ll focus on making both figure and background feel integrated and cohesive.

By following these steps, you’ll see how a contemporary realist painting can evolve in a clear, manageable workflow.
