Figures in the Landscape: Gesture, Color and Textures in Oil Painting

LIVE Online Workshop

Open to All Skill Levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

A five-week painting course with Andrii Kateryniuk

This workshop focuses on composing and painting a figure within a natural setting, using a structured process that reflects my own working method. Over the course of five weeks, we’ll move through each stage—from preparing the surface and building a solid drawing, to underpainting, color, and final adjustments—working from a single reference image provided at the start. The course blends a traditional three-layer oil painting structure with insights from my studio practice, including how I work with references, develop atmosphere, and build form through tone and color.

I’ll share my approach to building structure and atmosphere gradually, using a methodical process that still leaves room for painterly decisions and interpretation—including how I develop form in the figure and fabric, and how I paint natural elements like grass and foliage without overworking them.

Alongside the step-by-step demonstrations, I’ll share reflections on the themes that shape my work—how the human figure relates to its surroundings, how gesture and posture can suggest a quiet narrative, and how light connects the body to the space around it. We’ll also look at how subtle shifts in proportion, edge, and color temperature can bring a figure to life and give a sense of atmosphere and presence.

This workshop is for painters interested in figurative realism, landscape, or for those coming from a different background.
